Working from home and the positive impacts on mental & physical well-being with Kim Nelson

I am the Senior Graphic Designer of a women's fashion online ecommerce company, and I manage our Junior Graphic Designer and together we work within the marketing team.

I had the privilege of being able to continue working in my role from home during the lockdown. Working within digital marketing gives you the ability to compete your role from anywhere with a wifi connection!

All things considered; I very much enjoyed my time working from home. The positive impacts it had on both my physical and mental well-being were a surprise even to myself. Not having to complete a 45-minute commute to and from the office, along with doing a full face of makeup and packing a lunch etc every morning freed up so much time for me to relax and ease into my day.

I had the convenience of having access to my own fridge allowing me to make healthier food choices throughout the day, especially when those 3pm craving hit! Unlike at the office, I don't keep chips and lollies in the house so this also reduced the temptation of making unhealthy snack choices.

Not having to battle peak hour traffic to and from work had a very positive impact on my mental well-being and stress levels compared to a regular day going to the office. This also saved me on petrol and toll costs too. There are far less distractions for me when working from home and it gave me the ability to work undisturbed, alleviating the pressures from small disturbances that build up and can take hours off your productivity. As a Graphic Designer and a manager my day is heavily deadline driven, so the ability to minimise disturbances had such a positive impact on my productivity and stress levels!

I hope that the lock down period changes the attitudes of business owners to allow flexible working/work from home arrangements as an ongoing part of their employee's contracts moving forward. Seeing and experiencing firsthand the benefits of working from home I truly believe that embracing this lifestyle would have hugely positive impacts on the mental health of Australian workers.
