The Life of a Freelance Illustrator: Stephanie Lu

aprsunsw

Hey! My name is Stephanie Lu and I’m a freelance illustrator and 2D animator currently branching into graphic design. My works are predominately digital artworks focusing on portraiture and motion. Lately I’ve begun a series of portrait studies ranging from fanart of my favourite characters to friends and pro players that i’m following at the moment.

As a creative during these trying times, it's important to note that working from home vs working from home during COVID-19 are two very different experiences. Without the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the physical act of leaving your house and priming your mind for work and productivity, I’ve found myself being uncharacteristically unmotivated and mentally drained.

To cope I’ve been doing a lot of gaming recently and watching shows but coupled with my lack of motivation, some days I don’t engage with any creative medium at all. I forget that it’s okay to be unproductive in tough times like now but it doesn’t always improve my mood. What i’ve found that works best for me is to forgive myself when i’m feeling unproductive and to engage in small non-committal creative activities like watching a skillshare video or reading a book about design. I’ve got to take the small wins where I can to build the momentum of getting back into the swing of things.
